Film theorist Laura Mulvey’s pioneering 1977 non-linear avant-garde essay film Riddles of the Sphinx with an electronic film score was preceded by significant early video art pieces Hermine Freed’s 1972 360 degrees and Joan Jonas’ 1972 Left Side Right Side.

An evening of short films by animation, experimental film, and video art pioneers who unearthed new aesthetic realms through computer art, image processing, and appropriation. Lilian Schwartz; Vasulkas Inc; Lesley Keen; Mary Ross; Barbara Aronofsky Latham; Lynda Benglis; Doris Chase; Dara Birnbaum; Max Almy; Martha Rosler. 

This program highlights two groundbreaking 1970s collaborations between female new media artists and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company: Merce and Marcel by Shigeko Kubota and Nam June Paik; Torse by Charles Atlas with music by Maryanne Amacher. 


Making/Breaking the Binary: Women, Art & Technology (1968-1985) surveyed a generation of pioneering female cultural practitioners in new media and the technology innovators who helped shape the information age. In conjunction with the core project on view at Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery at the University of the Arts, the Lightbox Film Center at International House Philadelphia hosted three film nights of film screenings curated by Kelsey Halliday Johnson on Thursdays throughout fall of 2017.
